They say that when the barque Indiana ran aground off the shore at Worthing in a storm-dark night of 1901, her hold was heavy with oranges and lemons, their bright scent spilling into the salt air as the sea claimed the ship; the crew escaped, but the cargo did not, and for days after, the tide washed fruit along the beach like strange offerings, golden and glowing against the grey shingle.
