Yvonne J Foster, Sussex Folk Remedies
Sussex folk medicine. Everyday cures from Sussex folklore. This piece of artwork uses objects to tell a story. It contains a collection of unusual objects which were all once used in Sussex as methods of curing illness and disease. Some of the cures were found in old recipe books. Others passed down by word of mouth. There are ten items in the collection. Each has a brown label and or image, and a description of what they were used for. Here’s the list of things. An old dried and hardened potato. A stone with a hole through it. On an old piece of string. A deer’s antler. A hollow walnut. An old piece of wood. A mole’s foot wrapped in a piece of cloth, tied with string, and safely kept in a glass container. Four antique glass bottles, each containing different things. Bent pins. Snail shells. Cobwebs and woodlice.
