Eliph Hadert, Looking at Starlings over Railings

My name’s Eliph. I’m doing some embroidery. It’s inspired by the starlings on the pier. I’m from Brighton. We feed them in my garden and my mum feeds them a lot. So I get to see them really up close. But, I really like just how beautiful they are. They’re really iridescent and green and purple, and I like hearing them, the sounds of them. Oh, there’s a lot of little stories about starlings and myths and ideas about them. I’ve learned a lot of different, kind of like just how deep folklore has roots and Sussex. Like, we’ve done so much really in-depth research about the local area. I feel like it makes a lot more sense why people are quite superstitious in Brighton.  There’s  a lot more of like, there’s a really big interconnected web of stories in Sussex and they all kind of come from a lot of them come from the natural world. And that’s really what I’m interested in, is nature and how people interact with nature, because we’re kind of losing it. And, I think if people don’t stop, look, then you will lose nature eventually if you don’t appreciate it. Because when you go and watch them, it’s very magical. So I’ve done the railings and the starlings. I’m starting to do the starlings at the top, because the railings are kind of like a special color, a particular shade of Brighton blue, but it looks different under all of the light. So the railings on the pier are painted like a particular shade. I just hope that people can kind of look out over the railings of Brighton Pier and see the starlings and feel them, because that’s why I like thread, is it’s really tactile. I just want to kind of highlight just how beautiful it is and how lucky we are.
