According to local legend, the Devil created Devil’s Dyke in Sussex in a rage to destroy Christian converts in the Weald by letting the sea flood the land. Thwarted by a clever old woman who lit a candle behind a sieve to mimic sunrise, the Devil fled, leaving behind the deep valley and creating nearby hills like Chanctonbury Ring with thrown earth.
