The Shoe Story

I bounced across the sharp, wet gravel lining the alleyway as I slipped from Evelyn’s foot. A series of scuffs and grazes, scarring me from heel to toe, all made worse by the damp and cold of the night. They stink to high heaven. I was just muttering, for Christ’s sake, not again, under my breath, with my thoughts were interrupted by angry voices. The shouting escalated until it was silenced abruptly by a thud. Next thing I know, I’m hit by a spatter of something wet and warm Annoying enough, but I was utterly incensed when I realized that whatever it was was staining. Next, the sound of something dragging, the slamming of car doors and clouds of choking exhaust and a tsunami of grit, then stillness. I’m left here in the alleyway, all alone, wondering what became of my twin. Doomed to hours of cold and boredom amongst the dirt. Until unnoticed. Daylight is but a distant memory. As I lie here. Left behind. Forgotten. Completely alone. A sole survivor.
